Rome – The IV Bra Day is underway, a day of awareness on breast reconstruction
Today, October 21, 2015, the University Hospital Foundation A. Gemini will be at the forefront of the celebration of IV “BRA Day” International Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day”, denominated from the English acronym “Breast Reconstruction Awareness”.
Starting at 18.00 the hospital hall will host a major awareness event on the subject, presented by the journalist Annalisa Manduca, promoted by Beautiful After Breast Cancer Italia onlus, chaired by Prof.Marzia Salgarello, Head of the Gemelli plastic surgery operating unit, in collaboration with the associations Susan G. Komen Italia and Iris Roma and sponsored by the Policlinico Gemelli Foundation e S.THE.C.P.R.AND. (Italian Society of reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery) .
The large program of the event, after the greetings of Eng. Enrico Gampedri, General Manager Polyclinic Foundation a. Twins, provides for the projection of the short film on breast cancer “Signs“, Signed by the young director Agnese Rizzello. The docufilm was born from the desire to tell the stories of pain in the “rebirth” phase.
The protagonists of the delicate and exciting story are three women (Arianna Stabile, Donatella Gimigliano and Monica Periccioli), and a narrator, Rita Dalla Chiesa, which collects their testimony on how they faced the psychophysical violence of breast cancer, all with the incursions and the soundtrack of the song by Cornflower “The sun inside” taken from his new album Frikando. At the end of the screening, Prof. Rocco Bellantone, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart. To follow the Prof. John Swap, Director of the Department for the Protection of Women’s Health, Newborn Life and Adolescents at Policlinico A. Gemini and founder Iris Roma, the Prof.
Richard Masetti, Director of the Integrated Breast Center of the Policlinico A. Gemelli and President Susan Komen Italy, and Prof.ssa Salgarello, will present at the “Wellbeing card – wellness card”, a project conceived by the three associations promoting the event in support of the psychophysical recovery of cancer patients. After a message from Don Angelo Auletta, spiritual assistant of the Gemelli, the evening will be closed by a fun fashion show “in pink”.
Despite scientific research and early diagnosis, there are still a lot of them women who have to undergo a total removal of the breast. Between these only 20-25% consider the possibility of undergoing breast reconstruction. Numerous studies carried out they highlighted instead as for as the reconstructive intervention is not strictly necessary for the treatment of the disease, significantly improve the quality of life of the patient who undergoes it.
The goal of Bra-Day, and information among health professionals, the media and above all to all women that breast reconstruction is not only feasible in most cases, but is itself part of the treatment of breast cancer.
Starting point of Beautiful After Breast Cancer Foundation is to help each patient realize the desire for a full and happy life with a recovered body image. The non-profit organization was created with the aim of providing information, but also of conveying to medical personnel and surgeons the importance of breast reconstruction and well-being after a cancer diagnosis, and to promote scientific research and training to improve available reconstructive techniques.
